You may or may not know this about me, but I’m a big fan of Amazon as a selling platform.
In fact, I had my first “big” business success as an Amazon seller. My business partner, Ernesto, and I created a bedsheet brand from scratch.
And we grew that business from $0 to over 6 figures in sales each month in about 18 months.
Then we were able to sell the business for a nice profit.
Even though that was a few years ago, the opportunity for you to do the same still exists today.
But, if you are going to start an Amazon business, you should follow these 7 steps:
1. Decide What to Sell
Amazon is the world’s largest online marketplace, and for a lot of people, it’s the first choice when they’re looking for a product to buy.
As an Amazon seller, you have the opportunity to reach a whole world of customers.
But with so many products available, what do you choose to sell?
One way to go is to choose items that are in high demand and that are not already being sold by a large number of other sellers.
But the better route and more importantly, you want to choose a product that you are passionate about and that you have knowledge on.
Then you can really start working towards building a successful business on Amazon.
2. Create Your Brand
For a lot of entrepreneurs, creating a brand on Amazon is the key to success.
Branding is very important for any business, but more importantly on Amazon.
So right about now you’re probably wondering why, and that’s understandable because it’s supposed to be simple; you have a product, people find it, and buy it right?
Maybe in the early days of Amazon sure, but platforms evolve, get more competitive, and you need to start standing out.
With millions of products now available, customers need something to tell how your product is different from the competition.
So a strong brand helps customers to remember your product and makes them more likely to buy from you again in the future.
With just a little creativity and determination, you can start to build a brand that will resonate with customers and help your business to stand out from the sea of other Amazon sellers.
3. Start With 1 Product
When just starting out on Amazon, all it takes you is one product.
When you start out with your 1 item, you don’t need to worry about all the multiple SKUs and you have an opportunity to better manage your inventory to keep your costs low.
You also have the chance to perfect your listing, packaging and set yourself up to create those 5-Star customer reviews – all essential for any kind of success on Amazon.
Of course, selling on Amazon has challenges, but if you’re prepared to put in the work, it can be incredibly rewarding, with just one product at a time.
4. Establish Your Seller Central Account
Now this may be obvious, but if you want to get in on the Amazon action, you absolutely need to set up a Seller Central Account.
Creating a Seller Central account is fairly simple and should only take a small chunk of time.
All you need to do is go to Amazon’s website and click on “Sell on Amazon.”
From there, you just need to provide some basic information about yourself and your business.
Once you complete the sign-up process, you’ll be ready to start listing your products on Amazon.
So if you’re serious about selling online, then establishing a Seller Central account is a must.
5. Optimize Your Listing
Once you have your Amazon Seller Central account, you move onto creating your listing, but more importantly, optimizing it!
Your Amazon product listing is one of the most important marketing tools in your wheelhouse.
It’s your chance to get found on the search result page and convince potential customers to buy from you.
So, how can someone optimize their listing to maximize this? Well, here’s a few tips:
1. Make sure your title is clear and understandable. Use key keywords that prospective buyers are likely to use when shopping around for products like yours.
2. Second, use high-quality product images that show off your product in the best light possible.
3. And finally, write strong product descriptions that highlight the benefits of your product.
These are just a few tips you can take advantage of to make sure your Amazon product listing is optimized for maximum impact.
6. Have friends & family buy from you
One of the quickest and easiest ways to let the Amazon algorithm recognize your product is to get sales!
And the most convenient way to start doing that is telling your friends and family about your product so they can buy it.
And if you want to prepare even more strategically, take a survey of who’s willing to order before your product is even up and running on Amazon to send them all a message when it’s available.
Friends and family are the best way to help you start rolling on Amazon, just make sure you remember to ask for their honest feedback to save yourself from sending a bad product to the rest of the market!
7. Learn How to Rank Your Product
Keyword research is essential for any business that wants to rank on Amazon.
When you understand which keywords consumers are using to search for products, businesses can optimize their listing to ensure that their products appear as high as possible in the search results.
On top of keyword research, businesses will also need to invest in pay-per-click (PPC) campaigns at some point.
As a matter of fact, PPC campaigns allow you to bid on keywords to place your product listing on the 1st page search results.
These placements can be extremely powerful, because it puts your product in front of consumers who are already interested in what you have to offer.
So when you mix PPC campaigns with keyword optimization, as long as your listing converts you’re setting yourself up for success!
Because the goal of keyword optimization is to rank higher in Amazon’s search engine result pages so if you’re already ranking yourself higher with PPC, now you’re just slowly increasing your organic visibility and generating yourself even more sales.
Now, the first 3 to 4 steps are your personal responsibility, but for the rest, you can get help with.
