Hey guys, Manuel Suárez here with the Power of Marketing Podcast #12. Saying hello from the city of Quebec in Canada. I’m spending the last few days here in this incredible country which is a first-time visit, came with the family. The purpose was for business. I came to deliver a few seminars to an awesome group of people that are looking to keep on the expansion and take advantage of the opportunities that we have today. So, I always love doing that. It’s part of my job, but just like I’ve talked to you guys about before, none of these feels like work.
I just turned 37 yesterday, just having an awesome day and a lot of realizations about where I stand today at the age of 37 and what I have accomplished in the last few years and how much we have left. I always talk about on my seminars how people have been saying for a long time how life is so short and you’ve got to just live it and enjoy it and have fun. I personally disagree because I don’t think life is short. I think that 90 years of poverty is long, gruesome, painful and full of unhappiness. So I’m not definitely into that and I don’t wish that on anybody. That’s something I think that a lot of people use as an excuse to not succeed. Like “I’m just going to go and have fun because life is so short”. I don’t like that viewpoint because number 1, when you’re doing something that you love, it’s just having fun in life and just enjoying what you are doing. Number 2, when you have that viewpoint, then, you’re missing out on being able to build what you wanted to build for yourself.
If you are ambitious, you know, there’s a lot of people that are not ambitious, and that’s totally fine. But anyway, so I just want to start off with that little message because I keep on coming into coming across into that viewpoint once in a while about “Hey, you should be more social. You should engage with more people. You should have more friends. You should go and have more parties, do more activities and whatever it is.” I think, that’s something that overall causes a loser mentality and creates difficulties for a person that wants to accomplish goals and dreams and ambitions and all kinds of things. And when you have family members that surround you, or friends, or close people to you that tell you that you’re working too hard, it usually comes from that loser mentality. Because when you get the support, when the people around you really understand you and understand what you are trying to accomplish, then you don’t usually experience that. It’s one of those things that you usually get that attitude from family members and from people around you that have not themselves built something special.
If you have a father or a mother, an uncle, or a friend, or a wife, or a husband, or whoever that actually has governed the process and has been successful and has accomplished their dreams, trust me, you will never ever, ever get a viewpoint from them “You’re working too hard, enjoy life. Life is short. It’s going to disappear right in front of your eyes”, or any of that stuff. So, no, life is not short. When I look back, my birthday yesterday, I’m 37 years old, I think like I have liked for a couple of a hundred years already and a few decades. So for me, it feels like it’s just the beginning of it. I’m just getting started. I already have a family with 3 kids and a marriage of 12 years and all these other stuff that I’ve started early. But it just feels like I’m just at the beginning era of my life. So, let’s just keep pushing hard. If you have dreams that you want to accomplish we have an era in front of us that none of our grandparents ever did. Any of the ancestors never even imagined in their wildest dreams. So there’s no reason why we cannot just figure out how to control that communication system that we have in front of us to our advantage and increase our potential survival of ourselves and those around us.
Today, on this episode I just want to cover a quick subject while I’m here with you guys because I’ve been hearing a lot of buzz recently and a lot of chaos has come from the Mark Zuckerberg post that he did last week in regards to the changes that are coming up on the Facebook algorithm and I want to clarify that for you so I can eliminate any and all possible doubts that came from it.
So if you haven’t heard about this announcement, well, let me tell you what it is. Basically, last week, Mark Zuckerberg came out with a post in which he says that Facebook is going back to focusing more on posts showing you as a user, post from your friends and family that you care about the most instead of crowding your news feed with brands and other things that you might not be that interested in. This is something that has caused a lot of pandemonium and a lot of worry on the marketing community, on agencies and brands, and all kinds of people. And the reality is that there’s a reason why Mark Zuckerberg is doing this. Let me tell you one of the things we know from Mark Zuckerberg’s last 10 years as an entrepreneur.
He is 10 years ahead as an entrepreneur. His mind, the way that he sees the future, is something that is very unique and has not been seen before on this planet. We never had people with this type of skill, maybe a handful, 5 or 10 people. Another guy that’s similar to that is Jeff Bezos which is the one that’s building Amazon and making it a monster that is taking over this planet.
If there’s somebody in this planet that you shouldn’t second guess when it comes to what they’re doing, it’s finally Mark Zuckerberg. Because he’s proven time and time again and he’s proven all his haters wrong every single year, every single quarterly report on the stock market, he shows the haters, the naysayers how wrong they are. It’s something that he’s really proud about. Just recently the last quarter of the stock market report in which Facebook reported their earnings. They are just squashing it. This is a company that is exploding in market cap and their ability to produce income. So, long story short, there is a reason why Mark Zuckerberg is doing this. And let me tell you what I feel might be on his mind. Okay. If you’ve heard this post and you’re already also yourself panicking about this whole thing.
I think that marketers were actually finding a way to really invade people’s news feed too much to the point that people stop seeing enough posts from their friends and family. And this in turn caused them to stop creating publications on their own and doing posts to tell their friends and family what’s going on. So what happens? This is very very important and very very valuable for Facebook. Because when a user stops posting things about their personal life in connection with their friends and family, Facebook stops getting the most valuable thing that they have. That valuable things is called “data”.
This is what allows Facebook to actually give us as marketers the targeting data that we always dreamed about being able to have as marketers that newspapers, radios, and televisions had never had before. So, they have probably noticed that even though the platform is being used actively by more and more people every single day, Mark Zuckerberg himself probably noticed there was a glitch on the algorithm, on the system that was making these brands more visible and their friends and followers less visible which in turn was causing them to not promote or not post so much about themselves that was then causing marketers who have less data.
So, in order to do that, he’s actually handling like a big major PR stunt cause he’s letting the world know and he’s making sure that he goes viral. If you want to know what this post is, you can actually Facebook it and search Mark Zuckerberg post and you’re going to find the results about this post. You can google it, well, it’s all over. He made sure that this post went massively viral. So, it’s not something that it’s done on accident. He’s not trying to collapse the company. He’s not trying to suddenly make Facebook into a non-profit organization. Whatever he’s doing in whatever way he does it, he’s doing it for a major logical reason to keep the company growing and its path towards becoming the most powerful company in this planet.
Currently, Facebook holds the 5th most valuable position in the United States market and they are moving really fast. Very soon they are going to take over other guys like Microsoft, etc. Like if we talk about the actual numbers right now and the positions, Apple is still number 1, Google is number 2, Microsoft is number 3 I believe, Amazon is number 4 and number 5 is Facebook. So, Amazon and Facebook I would say, my prediction is today, in 2018 towards the end of this year or towards the middle of 2019, Amazon is going to be the top company market cap in this planet even more than Apple or close to it if it’s going in this direction. Or, if somehow Apple collapses because Apple still has 200 million extra in market cap than them, actually 200 billion extra, that’s the actual number. Apple was about 750 billion market capitalization at this point and Amazon was about 600 so they’re not that far away. So the point is that those 2 guys – Amazon and Facebook – controlled by those 2 geniuses will continue in its market domination worldwide. So whatever he’s doing, he’s doing it with a purpose to get people more engaged in the platform to be able to continue feeding us as marketers the right data and eventually improve the algorithm so we can still promote our messages in front of these massive audiences that Facebook gives us access to.
So, it’s only getting better. I see obviously the market merely reacted to it and there was I believe a 10% drop in the stock value and a bunch of people talking about it and people panicking and some people stopped doing promotions on it. Who knows what else? I’m still running campaigns, I’m still being successful. Supposedly this is going to be a gradient shift on the algorithm but the reality is that Facebook will not change much the way they are doing their thing because they need to keep on growing their revenue but they made the announcement as a PR strategy so that they can continue increasing the user engagement on their platform which is what drives the power of day’s social media giant.
So, in short guys, there’s a reason for that. You always have to understand that when Mark Zuckerberg does something, he makes very little wrong choices and wrong decisions. There are reasons why he does things and he’s proven time and time again that he’s right. So I personally, not obviously an owner of Facebook but I have benefited a lot from this platform and I believe after years of working with it, that every change they have done along the way has actually contributed.
Just like for example, when Facebook started talking about they were going to eliminate Messenger inside of Facebook, people started panicking and then they separated the platform. And now, Messenger is a platform all by itself producing billions of dollars for them. Okay? So right decision.
Again, just like when Facebook talked about their news feed organic reach was disappearing, and now, we can only reach 2-8% of your organic post that you post on your page, and people started panicking about that. Everybody was going to abandon ship and leave Facebook and they were going to lose their users and everything. Well, they have massively exploded since then.
There are many examples guys of what they’ve done over the years coming from the leader, coming from his decision to actually create that effect because he sees the future and he sees 2 or 3 years ahead that if he doesn’t make this change, his company is going to suffer. So it’s a logical thing that he’s doing because he already saw the future in order to be able to keep the company growing in the right direction. Have no doubt about it. This company is driven by advertising and he’s not going to make a decision that affects their advertising revenue.
So, anyway guys, I just wanted to give you a brief overview of that change. Things are going to keep on rolling.
