What MCP actually is: the kitchen with the whole menu
APIs pass orders around. MCP puts the software and the AI in one kitchen.
Every time I say the letters MCP on a call, I watch half the room write them down and the other half nod like they know. So let me give you the analogy I use, because once you see it, you can't unsee it.
Think about a restaurant. You sit down, you get a menu, you place an order. An API works like that order slip: it takes your request, carries it to the kitchen, and the kitchen makes that one thing for you. There are several parties involved — you, the waiter, the slip, the kitchen — and every request walks that same route, one dish at a time.
Model Context Protocol is different. With MCP, the kitchen has the entire menu. It has access to all of it, and it produces all of it without discussing anything with anybody in between. No line. No middle parties. You are standing in the kitchen, and everything the kitchen can make is within reach.
Why this matters to a marketer
The large language models — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini — have been brilliant for a while. But on their own, they respond. You give them an input, they give you data back: an answer, research, a piece of writing. What they could not do was connect to your software and get work done inside one platform.
MCP is the bridge that fixes that. It brings the software in on one side and the model in on the other, and pulls them together so you can operate from within one place to handle everything you need.
Think about how a real business runs. In my agency we use GoHighLevel. We use ClickFunnels. We run our communication and project management through ClickUp. Add the ad platforms, the store, the email tools, and you're logging into a different dashboard for every question you want answered. That tab-hopping is where your day goes.
With MCP connections in place, I ask my questions in one interface. How did the campaigns do overnight? Which ones deserve more budget? What does the funnel look like this week? The AI goes to the source, reads the actual numbers, and comes back with the answer — and when I want action taken, it can take the action in the same conversation.
The shift under the shift
Here's what I want you to take from this. The story of the last few years was learning to talk to AI. The story now is letting AI talk to your tools. Those are different skills, and the second one is the one that changes how a business operates day to day.
You don't need to be technical to start. Pick one platform you check every single day. Connect it. Ask the questions you normally answer by logging in and staring at a dashboard. That first connection is when the letters MCP stop being jargon and start being the kitchen you cook in.
